The ancient cave rock paintings at Damxung County
A patch of ancient rock paintings has been discovered in the caves at the Tashi Peninsula of Nam Tso Lake. They are scattered around more than ten locations and most of them are painted on the rocks inside the cave. The paintings amount to about 250. The contents are yaks, deer, horses, sheep, cameral, wolves, panthers, people, trees, birds, eagles, sun and pagodas, etc., which show the scenes of herding, hunting, shooting arrows on horse, dancing, fighting and so on. One way is to cover the whole body of the images with paint, and another is just to draw the outline of them. The main paint is red minerals, with bit of black ones as supplements. It is the first time to find rock paintings in the caves of Tibet. This patch of paintings are not only relatively numerous but also rich in contents. They provide precious practicalities for people to study the development of Tibetan religions, the economy and culture of nomads and the ancient art styles.
