Tibetan medical system is based upon a synthesis of the indigenous Tibetan, Indian, Persian, Greek and the Chinese Han medical systems, and it continues to be practiced in Tibet, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, Siberia and Mongolia, as well as more recently in parts of Europe and North America. It embraces the traditional Buddhist belief also.

Tibetan medicine is a centuries-old traditional medical system that employs a complex approach to diagnosis, incorporating techniques such as pulse analysis and urinalysis, and utilizes behavior and dietary modification, medicines composed of natural materials and physical therapies to treat illness.

Like other systems of traditional Asian medicine, and in contrast to biomedicine, Tibetan medicine first puts forth a specific definition of health in its theoretical texts.

Tibetan medicine views illness as the result of imbalances in the biological rhythm. When examining a patient, the practitioner begins by assessing the patient's constitution. This examination includes observing the patient, making inquiries, and pulse-taking. Then, the practitioner determines a reason for the imbalance and implements a method of restoring balance.

Recently, Tibetan medicine is receiving greater attention from the public, scholars and the media, and it will continue to be carried forward as a living tradition.
